Pickleball, anyone? The sport is getting a closer look as more and more reports of serious eye injuries hit the news. A recent Forbes article featured the story of Cassidy Phillips (pictured below) who lost his iris after a deflected ball hit him in the eye. The close range of play, the size of the ball, and the paddle design all make pickleball especially risky for eye injury.

Currently, only 10-20% of pickleball players, professional and recreational, wear eye protection. Safety eyewear is the first place to start, but if you have suffered a serious injury, we can help! We recently fit a patient with a custom color-matched contact lens after she had serious damage to her iris. The lens helps restore the appearance of her natural eye but also improves vision and reduces glare and light sensitivity by giving her back a more natural pupil size.
