Using over-the-counter or prescription eye drops for the treatment of dry eye is a common approach, but for many patients, it can be frustrating and uncomfortable to put eye drops in multiple times a day. Luckily, there are a number of very effective options for dry eye treatment that don’t involve eye drops!
- Tyrvaya nasal spray is an FDA-approved dry eye treatment that stimulates the trigeminal nerve to release tear film at every layer. It can be used up to twice a day for dry eye relief.
- Optase dry eye spray is a spritz bottle version of artificial tears. Just close your eyes, spray, and when you blink microdroplets of rewetting drops will enter your eye.
- Hot compress massages improve dry eye symptoms by melting any blockages in the oil glands in our eyelids (meibomian glands). Just microwave as directed on the packaging for your specific eyelid heat mask, place it over your closed eyelids, and gently massage along the base of your eyelash roots to target the glands.
- TearCare in-office treatments target the meibomian glands with a higher grade of heat than a hot compress can achieve, resulting in long-lasting dry eye relief. A 2018 study of patients with meibomian gland dysfunction found that just one TearCare in-office treatment offered significantly greater benefits than daily warm compress massages.
- IPL or intense pulsed light is an incredibly effective in-office dry eye treatment. Pulses of light target inflammation, restoring tear film balance and improving redness and discomfort.
